Autumn in Aswan is more than just a shift in weather – it is the start of one of nature’s most spectacular journeys: the migration of millions of birds along the Nile Valley. This year, through three consecutive birding trips on the Nile on 24, 27, and 31 August 2025, I have already witnessed the first exciting wave of early migrants, a clear signal that the migration season has begun.

The First Travelers of the Season
During these outings, the riverbanks and islands revealed the first travelers making their way south. Among them was the elegant Wood Sandpiper, probing the mudflats with its quick steps; the powerful Great Cormorant, already gathering in small groups; and the striking Red-backed Shrike, perched watchfully on reeds and bushes. On the water, the graceful Garganey Duck appeared, an unmistakable sign of autumn passage, while in the foliage the soft calls of Willow Warblers and Lesser Whitethroats added a touch of liveliness to the river’s edge. To crown the sightings, a soaring unidentified buzzard species hinted at the raptor movements soon to dominate the skies of Aswan.

Aswan: A Front-Row Seat to the Migration Spectacle
These early encounters are just the beginning. In the coming weeks, the Nile Valley will transform into a living corridor of migration, hosting hundreds of species on their journey from Europe and Asia to Africa. Aswan, with its unique location and diverse habitats, offers a front-row seat to this spectacle. For birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers, this is the perfect moment to plan visits, join boat trips, and experience the magic of migration unfolding against the backdrop of the Nile, desert mountains, and golden autumn light.

An Invitation to Witness Life on the Move
If the first days of migration are already this rewarding, the weeks ahead promise an unforgettable season. Whether you are a seasoned birder or simply curious about the wonders of nature, autumn in Aswan is an invitation to witness life on the move -an awe- inspiring reminder of the resilience and beauty of birds that connect continents through their journeys.
