How volunteering in an ambitious seeds bank project richens my passion of birding.

I’m thrilled to share with you my incredible experience as a volunteer in the ambitious Nile Valley Seed Bank project in Aswan, Egypt.
Last Thursday, we celebrated the closing ceremony of the project’s first phase, marking a significant milestone in conserving our region’s biodiversity.
In just 6 months (September 2024 – February 2025), we’ve collected seeds from 110 different plant species. They are representing 41 families. Our team conducted 25 field trips, and our experts worked tirelessly to test and sort the seeds.
But that’s not all! The Nature Reserves Management in Aswan also organized training courses, and awareness sessions for over 920 community members.
This project was organized by the Nature Reserves Management in the Southern Region, PPI OSCAN, UICN, RAED, and BENBAN SOLAR DEVELOPERS ASSOCIATION.
As a birder and birdwatching guide, I’m proud to have been part of this groundbreaking initiative. Seed banks are crucial for preserving our native wild trees, which provide attractive habitats and roosting areas for several bird species. When we protect trees, we protect birds.
Lastly, I’d like to extend my gratitude to everyone involved!
