Trip of Blessings: An Unforgettable Birding Trip with Mr. and Mrs. Daoud

Last August, a two-day birding trip to Abu Simbel with wildlife photographer Mahmoud Elshamy turned into an unforgettable adventure. From the first-in-a-century breeding record of Reed Cormorant to the largest flock of Crimson-rumped Waxbills ever seen in Egypt, “the trip of blessings” revealed Lake Nasser’s hidden wildlife treasures in breathtaking fashion.

Lake Nasser jewels: Birding Trip Report July 2025

Back in February, I was contacted by a keen Western Palearctic birder who had one clear goal in mind: to travel deep into southern Egypt and find some of the African specialties and Lake Nasser treasures that every birder dreams of.
Among his targets were Village Weaver, Kittlitz’s Plover, Yellow‑billed Stork, Pink‑backed Pelican, and African Skimmer.
