Nature belongs to everyone.
This simple idea was at the heart of a pioneering birdwatching experience organized in Aswan for visually impaired participants, an event that redefined what birdwatching can mean beyond sight alone.
On November 21st, 2025, birding guide and conservation advocate Ismael Khalifa organized a unique inclusive birding event in coordination with Mrs. Salma AlAnsary, founder of the “Leadership with Will” initiative.
The experience brought together visually impaired participants of different ages for an unforgettable journey into the sounds, feelings, and stories of nature along the Nile in Aswan.
The event carried a powerful message: Birdwatching is not only about seeing birds. It is about experiencing nature with all the senses.
Listening to Nature in a Different Way
For many people, birdwatching is associated mainly with binoculars and photography. But during this special event, participants explored birds through hearing, imagination, and detailed sensory descriptions.
Instead of focusing on visual identification, the experience relied on:
- Bird songs and calls
- Natural soundscapes
- Environmental atmosphere
- Storytelling and verbal interpretation
Participants listened carefully to the sounds surrounding them while guides described every species encountered in vivid detail.
A New Vision of Accessibility in Nature
The initiative represented one of the first known inclusive birdwatching experiences for visually impaired participants in Aswan.
Beyond birding itself, the event highlighted an important issue: accessibility in environmental education and eco-tourism.
Outdoor and wildlife activities are often unintentionally designed only for people who can fully rely on sight. This event challenged that assumption by proving that nature experiences can be adapted creatively and meaningfully for everyone.
The experience demonstrated that:
- Nature education can be inclusive
- Conservation belongs to all communities
- Sensory experiences go far beyond vision
- Birdwatching can become a tool for empowerment and connection
The atmosphere throughout the event was emotional, joyful, and deeply human. Participants were not treated as spectators, but as active explorers of the natural world.
The Role of Community Collaboration
The success of the event was built on collaboration between local conservation efforts and community initiatives.
Through the coordination between Ismael Khalifa and Mrs. Salma AlAnsary, the experience combined environmental awareness with social inclusion.
The “Leadership with Will” initiative has long focused on empowering people with disabilities and supporting their integration into society through meaningful activities and community engagement.
By partnering with local birdwatching and conservation efforts, the initiative opened a new door for accessible eco-tourism and inclusive environmental experiences in Upper Egypt.
